In a quest to discover a way to protect the astronauts from temperatures ranging from -273 degrees to +238 degrees Celsius, NASA found that a thin sheet of aluminum foil radiant barrier would do the same job as a seven-foot thick piece of conventional insulation. Needless to say the astronauts space suit could not be seven-feet thick; therefore radiant barrier was implemented into the space suits. By placing the reflective barrier in the space suits it reflected the astronauts body temperature back at them, keeping them warm. It also reflected the deadly radiation from the sun helping to keep them cool.

The radiant barrier kept more than 95 percent of the radiant heat from penetrating the space suits and small holes were placed in the material to allow moisture to escape. The end result was that the material maintained constant and comfortable temperatures in the space suits. This same technology is now available for your home. Radiant barriers or reflective barriers inhibit heat transfer by thermal radiation and they will allow you to cost-effectively save on heating and cooling costs throughout the year.

When the sun beats down on your roof in the summer time, your roof shingles heat up. The heat that gets stored up in the shingles then radiates into your attic; making it heat up and causing your air conditioner to work harder and harder to keep up. A professionally installed radiant barrier product will reflect back up to 97% of that heat and block the heat from entering your attic.

In the winter time, heat will typically rise and escape your home through your attic. By having a radiant barrier professionally installed in your attic, that heat will be reflected back into your home, keeping it from escaping, and thereby reducing your energy bills.
